Even in ancient times, damiana was considered a medicinal plant in Mexico against exhaustion and dizziness as well as for muscle and nerve weakness. The Maya used extracts of the Damiana shrub as a mood enhancer, and also an aphrodisiac. It is now known that the flowers and leaves of damiana contain essential oils such as thymol, tannins such as tannin as well as proteins and starch.
